Why and how to learn tax law? When asking the question "why learn tax law," common answers would be that we want to save money, ensure proper tax filing, and comply with tax obligations. Learning tax law can also be beneficial for starting a business and running it in compliance with tax regulations. However, these motivations may not be sufficient for truly understanding tax law. Another reason to learn tax law is because it can be interesting. Taxes play a role in answering questions related to topics that we find intriguing. These topics may include how to judge our government in a democracy, the purpose of government, what government should and shouldn't do, justice, and fairness. Unfortunately, discussions on these topics are often general and lack substance because terms like "fair" and "justice" are not defined individually. The tax code, on the other hand, provides a concrete tool for understanding what the government considers fair and just at a given time. So, if you want to know the definition of these terms in practice, the tax code can give you a good indication. The best way to learn tax law is to reason with it and question it. Although the tax law may initially appear nonsensical, if we approach it from a historical perspective, we can understand the reasons behind its creation. To learn the tax code effectively, we should actively engage with it, just as we would with any other type of book. We should grapple with it, wrestle with it, and think critically about the reasons behind each law. By doing so, we are more likely to remember the law and make the learning process more enjoyable. Passive learning requires more repetition, whereas active engagement helps us remember and understand the law better.
