Most New Jersey residents follow a very simple tax return. Did you know that you can complete your New Jersey personal income tax in five simple steps? Step 1: Give us some information about yourself, like your name, address, filing status, and any dependents you're claiming. Step 2: Report your income. The most common types of income are wages, interest, and dividends. If you're an employee, you earn wages. Get the state wage figure from 16 on your W-2. You should have received a W-2 from your employer by mail or electronically. But don't put your W-2 away just yet, you'll need that later. If you receive interest income, report the amount from your 1099-INT, and any dividends from your 1099-DIV. These forms should have already been mailed to you or are accessible online from your financial institution. Step 3: Now let's talk exemptions and deductions. You can deduct $1,000 each for you and your spouse, and $1,500 for each of your children. You can also deduct the amount of your property taxes or a percentage of your rent. Step 4: Calculate your New Jersey tax. Our web file and most electronic tax software can calculate this amount for you, or you can find it on our tax table. Finally, Step 5: Now look at your W-2 again. If you worked in New Jersey, your employers should have withheld New Jersey taxes. You can find this amount in 17 of your W-2. If your withholdings and other payments are more than your tax, you get a refund. If they're less, send us a payment.
