Government shutdown is expected to start having an impact on taxpayers. This includes getting your refunds. 41 Action News reporter Steve and I'll talk to a tax expert as you prepare to file. With the government shutdown impacting the IRS, should you wait until the shutdown is over to file your taxes? We asked the experts, and they say no. Soon it will be that time of year again - tax season. Nathan Rigney with H&R Block says right now the only immediate impact of the government shutdown is calling the IRS hotline to get help on when you file. If you do, you get a letter in the mail. You wonder what it's all about. You try to call the IRS, you might not be able to get anyone on the phone. But you can go into an office, talk to a tax professional, and they can help explain what that notice means. If you e-file now, you will be in a holding queue, which is normal. The real concern will be if the shutdown lasts longer than January. Rigney says shutdown aside, you should file early for these reasons: it's always the best practice to file as early as you can, as soon as you have your information documents. And that's for two reasons. First, you get in line to get your return processed and get that refund issued. And then second, the quicker you can get your information into the IRS, the less likely you are to be a victim of fraud where someone uses your personal information to file a fraudulent return and get a refund in your name. The filing period is set to begin sometime at the end of January. Reporting Stephen Dial, 41 Action News.
