With the IRS deadline of April 15 approaching for individual income tax returns to be filed, many people are calling our office wondering what to do if they are not ready to file by that date. The irs.gov website provides form 4868, which grants an automatic six-month extension through October 15th in most cases for individuals to file their tax return without any penalty for late filing. However, if you believe or ultimately owe money to the IRS, they still expect that payment to be received no later than April 15. So, many people must estimate that payment and make it via EFTPS or via a check before April 15th. Now, there are three ways to file the 4868 form, which are available on the irs.gov website. The first way is to mail it, as long as it is postmarked by midnight on April 15th. The second way is to consult your tax preparer or use a commercial program like TurboTax, where they can guide you through the process. The third way is if you owe money, you can utilize the EFTPS program, which is available for taxpayers to electronically file their extension as well as their payment. Feel free to give us a call here at the office at 847-566-1040 or send us an email at info@ILtaxlaw.com. Thank you very much.
